Long ago I read a fic (gen, and quite short, I think), that ended with a line that (paraphrased) said that the reason for Sam leaving for Stanford was going far away enough, so that the news of Dean's eventual death would not reach him. Sorry, I know that's quite vague, but it's driving me crazy...
