Two episodes from my SPN AU case fic serial involve the boys helping/saving children:
"Golem": (Story so far) Amanda Winchester is dead and John is possessed by the yellow-eyed demon. Their son Dean has abandoned his old life as a college student and musician, and taken to the road with the mysterious hunter, Sam Campbell. Sam is teaching Dean about the supernatural and, together, they have embarked on a quest to find and rescue John, and avenge the deaths of their mothers. (This episode) A woman’s death unearths a secret that menaces two families. Dean struggles with his grief and anxiety while he and Sam try to solve the mystery and defeat a creature made of mud walking. But is fighting the monster enough in a case where innocence is the first victim? http://fanspired.livejournal.com/8764.html
and "Something Wicked?" A little girl has an imaginary friend who knows too much. When Sam Campbell and Dean Winchester investigate, Dean is haunted by memories of the little brother he never had. http://fanspired.livejournal.com/22091.html
Hope these might fit the bill. (The second story might also fit into your second category in a strange way.)
